Before becoming a medical assistant, you will need to either complete high school or pass a GED exam. If you need an alternative option, online high schools and GED preparation courses can often be completed in just a few weeks.
After completing high school or earning a GED, you’ll need to choose and complete a medical assistant training course. The first choice to make is whether you will complete a certification-only program or earn an associate degree.
Certification programs can be done either online or in person, and most coursework can be completed in just a few months. These programs will prepare you for your certification exam and your career as a medical assistant.
At Stepful, you can enroll in our 4-month medical assistant program, designed to prepare you for a widely recognized medical assistant certification. We’re committed to supporting our students every step of the way, from enrollment to career success.
Degree programs require students to complete general studies courses in addition to medical assisting classes. These programs take up to two years to complete and cost several thousand dollars. They prepare students for the same certification exams as certificate-only programs.
Both in-person and online programs usually include an externship opportunity. An externship is an unpaid work experience where students follow an experienced medical assistant for several shifts. During their externship, students will practice hands-on skills, understand the workflow of the facility, and build working relationships with other healthcare providers.
Externships can last a few days to weeks, and students spend around 80 total hours with their externship coach.
Organizations in Wisconsin that can offer externship opportunities to medical assistants include Williamson Medical Center and ThedaCare.
At Stepful, our coaches simplify the externship process by providing 1:1 guidance and connecting students with interview opportunities at one of our thousands of affiliated clinics nationwide.
At the end of your training program, you should be ready to take a medical assisting certification exam. Certification exams evaluate whether someone is ready to safely and effectively work as a medical assistant.
Both certification programs and degree programs will prepare you for one of these certification exams.
Each exam has similar eligibility and passing requirements. They must be taken with an online proctor or at a testing center. No testing aides, calculators, or notes can be used during any of these examinations.
Stepful prepares students for the CCMA exam, a nationally recognized certification offered by the NHA. With a strong focus on clinical skills, the CCMA stands apart from the CMA and RMA. The exam includes 200 questions, which students have 160 minutes to complete.
