Stepful's Learning Coach Model Explained – Setting Students Up for Success

Meet Brytelle – A Stepful Learning Coach

Hi, I'm Brytelle Walton! I live in Pennsylvania and I’ve been with Stepful for about a year and a half. My background is in higher education. I’ve worked on college campuses, in school counseling… I've always wanted to support students in whatever way I can. I joined Stepful back when our learning team was just two to three people.

Then, once we created our learning coach model, I became a learning coach!

What is a Learning Coach?

A learning coach is essentially the person that keeps the student motivated outside of the classroom and the instructor.

We take a proactive approach in supporting our students, rather than simply reacting when issues arise. Our coaches have lists of students who are considered “at risk,” allowing us to reach out to those students.

We then make sure to create individualized plans, ensuring that we're addressing each student's specific needs rather than offering generalized resolutions for all students. Even when it comes to academics, some students meet their requirements and are ready to graduate when the time comes, while others haven’t met those requirements. We have an awesome graduation remediation program where we provide those students the opportunity to catch up and graduate, even if they've fallen behind.

For example, I remember one particular student who was struggling in those graduation remediation weeks. They were having a hard time balancing work, home, and just getting things completed. They had gotten to a point where they were only a few points away from graduating, but felt like they simply couldn't do it anymore.

As their learning coach, I stayed persistent. I made sure I was reaching out to see how they were doing, and worked with them on plans to get their academics up to the requirement, as well as their tuition balance paid off. They were able to get their grade back up, and about two and a half months after they should have graduated, they were able to make a payment that covered the balance!

That was a big success story for me, and it was a very fulfilling moment. It affirmed that the learning coach role is necessary; you have to have someone who's dedicated and passionate about assisting students.

How is Stepful’s Online Platform Built with Students in Mind?

It's really exciting to know that the classroom account, which the students use every day, was created by our engineers at Stepful. It's not a service used by a bunch of other institutions; it's something we created in-house. So whenever we need to update or fix something in the classroom, we have that ability with our engineering team.

It definitely provides an innovation of how technology can be used in education. You don't have to be part of a giant conglomerate of a university or college. Our learning platform is created by our team, updated by our team, and consistently worked on to make sure that we're providing the best service and being user-friendly for our students.

What Do You Love About Being a Learning Coach?

For me, it has always been about being able to provide the same support and engagement that you get in a brick-and-mortar setting, but in an online environment. Working as a learning coach at Stepful has been the most gratifying for me, knowing that whether students are in-person or online, they can be successful.

Why Choose Stepful?

For any individual looking to get into healthcare, I think Stepful is a great opportunity. We're very affordable, very user-friendly with the technology and the platforms we use, and ultimately you have an entire support system of coaches, instructors, and your fellow classmates who want to see you succeed.
